BUILDING COMMUNITY

ONE Community Voice

One of the primary goals of Old North East Neighbourhood Association is to build community. We want to help foster a stronger sense of belonging and pride among residents who live in Old Northeast London. One way to do this is to get the conversation started so we have created a new community space, ONE Community Voice.  We aspire to make this blog a needed source of news on all sorts of noteworthy things happening at ONE; a place where you can learn about community events, business district happenings, and the changes happening in our 6 beautiful neighborhoods.

People living in this part of London have felt ignored, neglected or given a bad image by media who have colloquialized us as “East of Adelaide” or “EOA”. The term, “East of Adelaide” is often associated with a negative stigma and is perceived by some as a less desirable area, particularly due to the perceived higher crime rates and poverty levels. Carling Heights, Hillcrest, Huron Heights, Kilally Valley, Kipps Lane and Ridgeview Heights are all located East of Adelaide Street North. Residents of these neighbourhoods often feel this stigma remains till today and we are frustrated that it continues to paint a negative image of tis part of London, which, by our accounts, was and is untrue.

It’s time to get creative with your writing, make observations, discuss hot topics, share opinions on all things related to living in ONE, in London, and in Canada! We invite any resident, age14 and older, to share your perspective on any topic related to neighbourhood living It could be about schools, infrastructure, social service supports, or lack thereof, things about what you love about your neighbourhood or living in this part of London. It could even be a blog to thank someone in the neighbourhood who showed you kindness – your neighbours, the grocery store clerk, a first responder. Another idea for a blog post is to use it as a way to honour and profile someone who you feel is a local unsung hero. Why not, share a note of appreciation for a teacher, customer service representative at the local hardware store, a doctor or even a nurse. This blog is about the people of the ONE neighbourhood – do you now who the people are in your own neighbourhood?
